The House That Hated People

Date: Autumn, 2007

Location: Salem, New Hampshire

Historical Background: A lovely farmhouse over 100 years old, situated near a
schoolyard. The owner bought the property about 3 years ago as an investment
and began renting it out immediately. She soon discovered there was something
terribly wrong with the house. Structurally it was sound, but a darkness seemed to
permeate the inhabitants. Each tenant was suddenly struck with the worst luck
imaginable. One family was struck with major illness, another also suffered major
illness, to the point of being incapacitated to work. Another suffered loss of job and
break-up of marriage. A successful legal firm moved in, only to find all its business
dry up in six months, forcing them to close shop. The last tenants, struck down by
illness, loss of job and tensions within the family, which had not existed before
moving into the house, left in the middle of the night, leaving their belongings
behind. Whenever the owner would come to the house to work on it, she would
feel uneasy, convinced she was being watched. She would see dark shadows out
of the corner of her eye and would always try to have someone come with her so
she wouldn’t be alone in the house. She became so worried about renting the
house out again that she called us in to investigate.

Findings: The team had to make two visits to the house. During the first visit,
we did a walk through and took pictures and recordings, but captured nothing.
However, the heaviness and feeling we were being watched was palpable. Upon
entering one of the rooms in the attic, we experienced on our thermal thermometer
a severe drop in temperature. As each member of the team entered this small
room, we could feel what amounted to a concentrated ball of energy in the middle
of the room. Each of us, including the owner, were able to reach out our hands
and feel this mass of energy. Our shamanic training has given us the ability to
dissipate and ground this type of energy and once this was done, we were able to
make contact with the spirit of a male who had been feeding off the dysfunction
school nearby) and the abuse done by him to his elderly mother. Over the course
of two visits, we were finally able to release his spirit from the house.

Conclusion: As soon as we released the spirit, the owner noticed a marked
difference in the house. She no longer feared going there alone and felt it was now
a homey, inviting place. As of this writing, she has rented to a family with children
and there are no problems with the new tenants.
atmosphere in the house began to affect the living tenants, creating illness,
loss of jobs, etc. This spirit was kept strong because he was able to which

Westford Eagle

Ghost whisperers
By Kathleen Kirwin / Staff Writer
Thu Mar 13, 2008, 10:20 AM EDT

A figure stood in a graveyard in Westford. His old army fatigues didn’t flutter although there was a slight breeze outside. He stared ahead as he had always done since his death during World War I in 1918.
“Some people don’t even know they are dead,” said Betty Comerford, Westford resident and member of the
paranormal group Spirit Light Network.

The small group of investigators came across this WWI soldier’s ghost during one of their investigations around
Westford. After speaking with the soldier the group discovered he had been killed by an explosion in the war.
“He didn’t know he was dead because of the suddenness and trauma of his death,” said Comerford.
Comerford and the other members of the Spirit Light Network helped the soldier by each reliving his death for him. As a result of all the horrors he’d seen in the war, he’d stopped believing in God and was terrified to move on.

“It took a half an hour of speaking with him to finally convince him you’ll be accepted no matter what, and it was OK to go,” said Comerford.

This was all in a day’s work for the Spirit Light Network who focuses not only on finding paranormal activity but also helping change a space that is haunted.Group founder the Rev. Steve Wilson, a shaman and spiritual minister, said this is what separates their group from the more scientific teams see on TV.

“Yes, science can prove the ghost is there, but what then? We go in there and help clear the space,” said Wilson.

Both Comerford and Wilson have been experiencing ghostly things throughout their lives. Comerford is a third
generation physic. Her grandparents were Cuban and every Friday they would help spirits cross over.

“I would see ghosts growing up all my life. I’d see someone and it would turn out that person I saw died that day,” said Comerford.

Wilson was brought up around Spiritual Ministry, a belief system that has been around since the 1800s revolving around the belief of life after death.

“Growing up people who would come to the church are people who were having strange phenomena,” said Wilson.

Wilson also saw ghosts growing up and struggled with his visions until he decided to learn more about it.

“I read whatever I could get my hands on just to try and explain what I was experiencing,” said Wilson.
Comerford studied shamanism under Wilson and was inspired when she heard his idea to form a group to help spirits make the transition into the afterlife.

“I felt like I’m following family tradition,” said Comerford.

When the group arrives on a scene Wilson said it is important they go in with no preconceived ideas.

“We go in and ask questions, analyze what we are feeling. We never jump on something right away,” said Wilson.

Both Wilson and Comerford are what Wilson calls “empaths,” people who are capable of feeling what others are feeling on a very intense level.

“We can feel everything from their sadness to the physical pain they are feeling,” said Wilson.

The members of the group act as a conduit through which a spirit can process its emotions.

“When someone dies, they no longer have a body through which to process emotions. So we go in there and feel it for them and let it pass through us,” said Wilson.

Through processing these emotions, the spirits become lighter and can make easer ascension to the next world.

“Think of it like these emotions they are stuck with are like stones in their pockets. We are removing these stones,” said Comerford.

The group has several members who have a specialty ability to process specific spiritual situations. One member is very in tune with the land and is helpful in clearing outside areas. Another woman is good at processing suicides.

The group helped a woman in Salem, N.H. who had brought a rental property that seemed to bring bad luck to its inhabitants. Some lost jobs or their businesses went under. When the team got there, the previous residents’ belongings were all still in the house. The landlord told the group the previous renter had lost his job and each of his six children were getting seriously ill. They left in the middle of the night. Then team had to visit the house twice. The group found that children from the school next door were being abused in the house as well as several other awful events, including a murder, had taken place in the house.

“Basically all that bad energy built up and just was absorbed by any people who inhabited it,” said Comerford.

Reliving these experiences can be powerful for the group members but Wilson said they all have special training not to let the emotions take hold of them.

“Emotions are just energy. You can actually feel these things physically moving out of your feet when you don’t react to them, it’s called grounding,” said Wilson.

Learning how to let these feelings flow is crucial for what Wilson calls “haunted people” or his fellow empaths.
The group went to help a girl in Lowell who was waking up every night to a man shaking the end of her bed.

The group went there and it turned out there were three ghosts there, and one was the girls’ ex-co-worker. More ghosts returned after they cleared the space.

“After talking to her we realized she’d been seeing ghosts her whole life,” said Comerford.
Wilson said the most surprising thing he has learned through his experiences with the group is what keeps people here.

“You can’t hang onto things, it’s like a boat anchor on your soul,” said Wilson.

He describes a classic haunting where someone has put their heart and soul into building a house – literally.

“They are so connected to this physical thing, they can’t leave,” said Wilson.

The biggest thing the Spirit Light Network encounters is the “can you prove it” argument.

“I can’t. But I do know there are a million shows on this stuff right now and we are so busy we don’t know if we’re coming or going. I know of 10 other groups like us in Massachusetts alone and they are all busy,” said Wilson.

The hectic schedule isn’t going to stop anytime soon for the Spirit Light Network with a Saturday investigation in Acton and an upcoming investigation in Salem, N.H. The team is also planning another trip down to Gettysburg in the near future.

Survival Guilt

Date: Summer, 2008
Location: Hartford, Connecticut

Historical Background: A small house that has witnessed bad luck, ghostly
visitations from a malevolent spirit, physical attacks and a heaviness that permeates
the residence. Another paranormal investigation team had been called in, but after
being physically attacked by what they felt was an evil spirit, left and asked the
Spirit Light Network to investigate.

Findings: Several things happened. One of the team members had a dream the
previous night of seeing a large lion. Upon entering the basement where the other
paranormal team had been attacked, we found a large lion drawn on the wall. Just
as the team leader was about to say a prayer, he felt what can only be described as
tentacles hitting his back. The picture below taken right at that moment shows what
appear to be tentacles on his back, as well as the lion drawing on the wall. The team
found three entities in the home: (a) the spirit of a young woman, between 18-22
years old, who had been beaten to death by her boyfriend and whom she still loved
and was waiting for despite what had been done to her; (b) the spirit of a previous
owner who had survived WW2, but had lost friends there and carried guilt over
surviving. An alcoholic, he still considered this house his and was very resentful of
the present occupants; (c) the spirit of a recently deceased husband of one of the
occupants of the home. After speaking with the present owners, it was discovered
that the children had seen the spirit of a young girl several times, as well as that of an
older gentleman. They also reported smelling alcohol, though none were drinking
at the time.

Conclusion: The team discovered that one of the inhabitants of the home had also
suffered physical abuse from an ex-husband. The team believes that the dead girl
was drawn to that same type of energy and did not belong to the house. They were
able to convince her that she didn’t need to wait for her boyfriend anymore and that
it was alright for her to leave. One of the team members physically channeled the
angry ex-owner where the story of his service during WW2 was revealed. The rest of
the team were able to help him through his guilt and anger and he was reunited with
his army ‘buddies’ and crossed.

Reason for Haunting: There were two events happening in this home. The first had
to do with the spirit of the girl, who had suffered abuse in her life being drawn to
the abuse the living woman had suffered in her own life. Lost souls will many times
seek out the kind of energy they were familiar with in their lives and this is what the
team believes happened in this case. Through prayer and counseling, the team was
able to release her. The ex-owner, an angry alcoholic recluse in life, hung on to his
home, resentful of anyone who entered “his” house. This anger was fueled by deep
feelings of guilt at having survived the war when many of his friends did not. By
transmuting those heavy emotions, the team was able to ‘lighten’ him enough that he
was able to cross. The third spirit, who was the husband of one of the living
inhabitants, was not ready to go just yet and the team did not try to cross him. Later
the team discovered from neighbors that indeed, an angry alcoholic who kept to
himself did live in that home at one time. The present inhabitants have not
reported any more problems since the team visited.

Vampires Anyone?

Date: Early Winter, 2008

Location: Gilson Cemetery, Hollis, NH

Historical Documentation: Scattered gravestones dating from early to mid 1800s dot
this small roadside cemetery. Over the years many people have reported anomalies and
dark shadows disappearing INTO the gravestones. Orbs and ghostly voices have been
reported captured, cameras have stopped working and people swear they are being
watched when they enter the graveyard.

It is well documented that in the 1800’s, there was a belief in many New England towns
that if a series of sudden deaths occurred, it could be the work of a vampire. A well known
case of this is the story of Rhode Islander Mercy Brown, who in 1892, was believed to
have been a vampire.

Findings: We arrived around 9 pm one early winter evening and just as we were
crossing the quiet street to enter the graveyard, we saw a large shadow dart across the
stone wall that encloses the graveyard. There were no cars nor any animals that would
have created such a large shadow. It moved along the length of the wall, then
disappeared. We captured many orbs that night, including those of different colors. Two
members of the group experienced a sudden wave of nausea, followed by the distinct
feeling of the presence of a man, very much they do this?” We were immediately drawn to
a tombstone at the far end of the cemetery that belonged to a little boy. As we approached,
we felt the little boy was this man’s son. From what we could ascertain, there had been
much sickness in the area and although the boy was already dead by the time these
sicknesses occurred, he was blamed for them. We believe it was possible that some of the
townspeople may have seen his spirit and, not understanding the subject of ghostly
visitations, believed he had returned to do mischief. It is our belief that the townspeople
dug up the boy’s body to stop the illnesses from continuing.

Conclusions: We believe the father was stuck at the cemetery, still mourning what had
befallen the body of his child and still trying to protect his son’s gravesite.

Reason for Haunting: The father’s emotional frenzy at seeing his son accused of
vampirism and watching the body being dug up caused his spirit to be laden with strong
emotions that were not dissipated at time of death. His anxiety and horror and need to still
stand guard over the gravesite kept him tied to the graveyard, reliving his emotional trauma
over and over.

Killingly, Connecticut

Location: Killingly, Connecticut

Historical Background: A lovely farmhouse built in 1910 and situated on the Rhode
Island line, the house had been in the current family since 1965 after winning the property in a
poker game. All the holiday festivities were always focused around the house. The current
owner bought the property about 8 years ago from his mother-in-law after his father-in-law
died in the house. The current owner had a family of four and once again used the house as a
gathering place for family. Three years ago the wife left and asked for a divorce. This is
when the owner noticed a shift in the energy of the house and started to feel uneasy and
fearful. The holiday celebrations stopped and what had once been the center of family
activity ceased. The current owner seemed to encounter one road block after another. His
health declined, his finances dwindled and he was ultimately forced to put the property on the
market three years ago.

Findings: The team did a walk through and took pictures and recordings. The heaviness and
the feeling of being watched were palpable. Upon entering one of the rooms in the garage, the
team felt the spirit of a young boy and had a feeling that a terrible accident had occurred in
this room. One of the team members could smell blood. They left the garage and felt the
presence of the young boy follow them into the house. Upon entering the house they could
sense the presence of an older man and another young boy who they surmised was the older
brother of the boy they had found in the garage. The energy from the man was that of a
domineering, stern, humorless personality, while the energy of the boys seemed to indicate a
fear regarding their father. The team was able to ascertain that the entity had also experienced
his wife leaving him, causing the bitterness that seemed to envelope him, as well as the burden
of caring for two children on his own.

Conclusion: After much persuasion, the team was able to release the male entity. Once his
spirit was gone, it was easier to release the boys. Once this was accomplished, the owner
noticed a significant difference in the energy of the house. He was able to get a bid on the
house within a few weeks of the clearing and is working towards freeing himself of the heavy
weight of responsibilities.

Reason for Haunting: Many times when a living person experiences a traumatic incident in
their lives, such as a break-up of a marriage, they will attract a spirit who experienced an
identical trauma in their life. This appears to be a case of ‘like energy attracting like energy’.
The owner’s wife left him and the team discovered an entity who had suffered the same
situation. The heaviness of the spirit’s anger and bitterness actually intermingled with that of
the living owner, so that the owner was not only experiencing his own grief at the loss of his
marriage, but also unknowingly experiencing that of the spirit’s as well. Adding to the
heaviness of the energy was the fearful hold the entity had on his sons, causing the living
owner to also experience fear and anxiety. Once the team was able to release that energy, the
living owner was able to turn his life around, unburdened by such heavy emotions that, in
many cases, were not his, or were amplifying his own.

The Copper Queen Hotel

Date: Spring, 2006

Location: Copper Queen Hotel, Bisbee, Arizona

Historical Background: At the time of its opening in 1902, the Copper Queen Hotel was
considered the most modern hotel in the American West and hosted many dignitaries of
the time, as well as rowdy cowboys and miners taking advantage of the rich lodes of
copper, lead and silver located nearby. According to sightings reported over the years,
there are several resident ghosts at the Copper Queen Hotel. One is a tall older gentleman
with long hair and a beard, usually seen wearing a black cape and a top hat. Some claim
they smell the aroma of a good cigar either before or after seeing him. Another is the
spirit of a young boy, about eight or nine years old, who drowned in the nearby San Pedro
River. It is believed his spirit inhabits the hotel because either his parents or a relative
were employees of the hotel. He is blamed for much of the mischievous pranks that take
place at the Copper Queen, including guests finding their personal objects moved to other
rooms. The boy’s footsteps have been heard running down the corridors, followed by the
unmistakable sound of a child’s giggle. Perhaps the most famous apparition is that of a
female in her early thirties who has been identified as Julia Lowell, a prostitute who used
the hotel to entertain her clients. After being spurned by a client she’d fallen deeply in
love with, she committed suicide in the hotel. Allegedly appearing only to men, some
men have reported hearing a female voice whispering in their ear, while others claim that
she appears to them in the shape of bright white smoke. Then there is the reported
sighting of a front desk clerk from the early days of the Hotel named Howard who seems
to have taken his job so seriously that almost a century after his death, he still checks up
on guests and on other employees to make sure they’re doing their job.

Findings: As these incidents were being told to the team, one of the team members heard
a little boy’s voice behind them say “Look at the keys”, followed by a distinctive giggle.
Immediately, on the wallboard that holds all the room keys, a set of keys from a third
floor room began to move on its own. They also experienced severe drops in temperature
when they visited the room where Julia was supposed to have taken her life, as well as
glimpsing the shadow of a small boy in one of the upstairs corridors. One of the members
of the team, who is male, strongly felt the presence of Julia behind him to the point where
he could detect the faint aroma of a woman’s perfume (which the female members of the
team were not wearing). As he and the team left the Copper Queen, they all felt the spirit
of Julia following them. However, the further they moved away from the hotel, the more
panicked she became and they felt her leave them and return to the hotel.

Conclusion: With so many reported sightings, as well as several investigations by other
paranormal groups during the years, including our own, it is safe to say that the Copper
Queen is definitely haunted by several entities.

Reason for Haunting: In the case of Julia and the little boy, a tragic death will lead many
times to a spirit being trapped. Burdened by feelings of rejection and self hate, the spirit
of Julia cannot move on until those heavy emotions are transmuted for her. There may also
be feelings of guilt because of the way she earned her living that prevent her from moving
on. In the case of the little boy, it is reasonable to assume that he may not even know he is
dead and continues running down the corridors and giggling as he did in life. The elder
gentleman may have loved the hotel so much in life that he sees no reason to leave it in
death and continues enjoying his cigar while watching guests come and go. And the clerk,
who was conscientious in life, continues to feel a need to keep up the good work in
death. In his case, his identity of who he was became so wrapped up in the Copper
Queen Hotel and how he performed his job that he cannot break those bonds in death and
continues to carry out his duties to his own exacting standards.

Case Closed.
