We tread where others dread...
Massachusetts
The British Are Coming!
Date:Spring 2008
Location: Arlington, MA
Historical Background: During the opening volleys of the American Revolution, the town of Arlington, Massachusetts, (then called Menotomy, an Algonquian word meaning "swift running water"), lay in the path of both the British and American troops. After the battles of Lexington and Concord which took place on April 19, 1775, the Americans hounded the British troops as they retreated back to the safety of Boston. The heaviest casualties of this ‘running battle’ took place in Menotomy where 25 Americans and 40 British met their deaths.
